Personal assistants: Direct manipulation vs. mixed initiative interfaces
نویسندگان
چکیده
Interface agents are computer programmes that provide assistance to users dealing with computer-based applications. The introduction of agents to user interfaces caused the exploration of new metaphors to enhance user ability to directly manipulate interfaces. In this regard, mixed-initiative interaction refers to a flexible interaction strategy in which agents contribute with users by providing suitable information at the most appropriate time. Mixed-initiative approaches promise to dramatically enhance human–computer interaction by allowing agents to resemble human assistants. In this paper, we report a study on how the interaction metaphor can affect the user perception of agent capabilities and, in turn, the final success of agents. r 2005 Elsevier Ltd. What is Wrong with GUIs for Theorem Provers ?
Direct manipulation graphical user interfaces (GUIs) are widely available in virtually every application domain and, increasingly, for theorem proving assistants (TPAs). We argue both that the command-line based interaction paradigm has real advantages for theorem proving, and that some advantages of GUIs are diminished or even reversed for TPAs.
متن کاملAdaptive Mixed-Initiative Problem-Solving Assistants to Support Collaborative Work in Flexible Organizations
Different mixed-initiative problem-solving assistants have been implemented at EADS, but the requirements made on this type of application have evolved with the surrounding environment (collaborative work, distributed and evolving organizations). The focus of research work on this topic is now less on the sharing/control of the initiative and reasoning process and more on intelligent user integ...
متن کاملThe Pendle: A Personal Mediator for Mixed Initiative Environments
In this paper we propose a novel interaction model for augmented environments based on the concept of mixed initiative interaction, and describe the design of the Pendle, a gesturebased wearable device. By splitting control between user and environment, the interaction model combines the advantages of explicit, direct manipulation with the power of sensor-based proactive environments while avoi...
متن کاملMixed-Initiative Interface Personalization as a Case Study in Usable AI
58 AI MAGAZINE Software applications are often rich in functionality to accommodate users with diverse needs. Consequently, their graphical user interfaces (GUIs) can be complex, more so than is necessary from an individual user’s perspective. One means of helping users cope with this complexity is to provide them with a GUI that is personalized to their specific needs (for example, McGrenere, ...
متن کاملTRENDS & CONTROVERSIES Uncertainty, Action, and Interaction: In Pursuit of Mixed-Initiative Computing
Recent debate has highlighted differing views on the most promising opportunities for userinterface innovation. 1 One group of investigators has expressed optimism about the potential for refining intelligent-interface agents, suggesting that research should focus on developing more powerful representations and inferential machinery for sensing a user’s activity and taking automated actions. 2–...
